‘HoloLems’ Makes Your Room into a ‘Lemmings’ Level with HoloLens

Canadian technology company Globacore have created an AR homage to video game classic Lemmings (1991), now for Microsoft HoloLens. HoloLems, which is free on the Microsoft Store, uses HoloLens’ spatial mapping technology to generate an obstacle course from the player’s real environment. This gameplay video (heading this article) shows Globacore have managed to reproduce the basics of Lemmings within a real environment—one of the more impressive examples of HoloLens technology being applied to gaming. Young Conker, despite receiving a backlash for its peculiar character redesign, showed similar promise in terms of platforming-style AR gameplay, but the gaze-based control system with voice commands is probably more suited to HoloLems, where the player has indirect control of creature movement. As Microsoft’s self-contained augmented…

‘#Archery’ Takes VR’s Bow & Arrow Mechanics to the Logical Extreme

Shooting a bow and arrow in VR is a satisfying game mechanic. It uses both hands in a 6-DoF interaction that couldn’t work with a traditional game controller. VR Unicorns’ new game #Archery takes this bow and arrow shooting mechanic to the logical extreme in a quirky fashion that’s similar to their game #SelfieTennis. Now available on early access, I had a chance to talk with #Archery developers Jakob Johansson and Max Nilsson at GDC where they talked about their game jamming and rapid prototyping process that’s motivated driven by novelty and getting bored easily. ‘Forestry’s’ Procedural Mesh System Offers Unique VR Crafting & Destruction

Procedural mesh destruction and construction underpins Decoder VR’s first title, Forestry, which just launched on Steam. Built for Vive, Rift and PSVR, the game’s fully destructible world presents a vast forest for the player to cut to pieces, which can then be used to create new objects. As shown in this whimsical trailer, the game doesn’t take itself too seriously, embracing the inevitable madness that results from letting players loose in a destructible world with a bunch of axes. Behind the simple geometry of the environment is a procedural mesh system that allows for very fine cuts, opening up endless possibilities for new object construction; it is possible to create a self portrait entirely from wood shavings, for example. “We…

Hands-on: ‘EVE: Valkyrie’ Groundrush Update

Fanfest is upon us again, CCP’s yearly festival in Reykjavik for all things EVE Online, but to go along with the round table discussions and announcements surrounding the massive multiplayer is a new update to the studio’s sci-fi arcade dogfighter EVE: Valkyrie (2016). Coming April 11th to Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PSVR is an expansion called Groundrush that promises to deliver even more of that Star Wars-esque spaceship experience with planet-based maps (and one that looks awfully like the planet Hoth) among a host of other updates. Popping on the PS4 Pro-powered PlayStation VR headset, I found myself back in the game’s familiar launch tubes and sitting in the basic ship, the Banshee. My teammates, two disparate packs of German and Russian journalists, were conjoined…

Gorillaz’ Music Video Breaks Record as Most Successful 360 Music Video Debut

The 360-degree version of Gorillaz’ music video for new track Saturnz Barz received over 3 million views in the first 48 hours, making it the single biggest 48 hour debut for a 360 music video in the (young) history of 360 videos on YouTube. The track is from the band’s highly-anticipated fifth album, Humanz, due for release on April 28th. Returning with their first full album since 2011’s The Fall, British virtual band Gorillaz continues to innovate in its production techniques. In the band’s earlier ‘phases’, they often delivered high-tech live performances, famously pulling the ‘hologram’ trick with Madonna at the 2006 Grammy Awards. Their last music video, DoYaThing, was commissioned by Converse in 2012, and employed a mix of…
